Summer Program Description
Updated Tuesday May 24, 2016 by Kanata Little League.Summer Program
For 2016, players will register at the beginning of the year to participate in either a "2 month" (program runs only May and June) or "4 month' program (program runs May through August)
Players will be sorted in April into balanced teams from each of the 2 month and 4 month pools. During May and June, teams will play in either the Kanata Spring League (Rookie, Minor, Major) or the West Ottawa Spring Interlock league (Junior, Senior). 4 month teams will continue to play into July and August in the Ottawa Summer Interlock league.
We will also promote the participation in Summer to '2 month' players who may choose in early June to also participate in the summer league. Additional Summer teams will be formed from these players if the numbers allow it.
Summer Program - updated for 2016
The Summer baseball program follows on to the Spring program, providing an enhanced and more competitive baseball experience to players over the months of July and August. The program is open to all of our Spring players, and, only if space is available, additional registrants. TBall has not traditionally had a summer program, although we are not adverse to having one if volunteers are willing to organize such and demand warrants.
In Summer, teams from Kanata play in the Ottawa Summer Interlock league with teams from other Ottawa Little Leagues. As numbers are generally insufficient for each league to run their own "house" schedule, area Little Leagues have formed an "Interlock" league for the summer months. These are the only baseball programs offered by local Little Leagues over the summer period. Each summer program "Interlocks" with other local Little Leagues, and generally will have one "home" and one "away" game per week. The "away" games will all be in the Ottawa area, and will favour teams that are geographically closer to Kanata where possible.
Each KLLBA age division Rookie and older '4 month' teams will continue to play into July and August.
There will be also be an "All Star" team formed from eligible players, that will participate in the district Little League World Series playdowns, for each Little League age group - Minor, Major, Intermediate, Junior and Senior
Each '4 month' team, or Select Team will play summer ball in an appropriate league in the Ottawa area. This could be the Ottawa Summer Interlock league, or the newly formed NCOBA regional league.
**NEW FOR 2016** We will be forming 'Select/Travel Ball" teams at each age group from interested '4 month' players who wish to play at a higher competitive level. These teams will have an average of 4 baseball activities per week.
A few words about Level of Play: All players from Spring ball are eligible and encouraged to play Summer ball.. As school is not in session there tends to be more time to spend on skills development and team building. New players who did not play in Spring are also eligible to play Summer house ball if there is room on teams for them. There is absolutely no correlation between the "A" and "B" tiering that occurs in the Kanata Spring house league and the summer teams - all are eligible to participate, but the general level of play is one level above the same for spring. For example, Summer All Star "A" ball is one level above Spring House A or is equivalent to "Competitive". Summer "B" level of play is equivalent or slightly better than Spring House "A" ball.
While we try to include as many players as possible, it can be necessary to release players. Usually this will be due to numbers, for example 17 registrants which is too many for one team but not enough for two. And sometimes safety/skill necessitates a release.
It must be noted that the level where your child played spring ball will not necessarily correspond to where s/he lands for summer ball. It is not at all unusal that a player in the spring A division will play in the summer B division. There is only one summer Canadian A team per age division. Parents must ensure their child understands this perspective. Unfortunately some players (and parents) place far too high a value on labels used to group players. The caliber of play in B summer ball tends to be roughly equivalent to our Spring “A” house league divisions.

All Divisions Minor and above will hold final evaluation clinics for the ‘All Star’ teams during June 2016, and to be considered for those teams players must attend the scheduled tevaluation clinic sessions. Minor, Major, Intermediate, Junior and Senior “All Star” teams will be named no sooner than Wednesday June 15, 2016 as per Little League Rules.

All Star Teams (at Minor, Major, Intermediate, Junior and Senior) are selected after an evaluation process to be held in June. The All Star Teams are Kanata’s representatives in the World Wide Little League Tournament which starts with the District 2 playdowns and continues on to Provincial, Canadian and World Series Championships for the successful teams. Players on this team need to be available and committed to many practices before tournament play and are expected to be available for all tournament games. The Minor and Major All Star Teams will also participate in the Summer Interlock A Baseball League with other All Star Teams in the Ottawa Area. The summer league has 2 games per week, one home and one away, usually starting at 6:00 pm. The Clinic schedule will be published elsewhere in this section of the website.
Kanata will field All Star Teams at Senior, Junior, Intermediate (13 year olds), Major and Minor.
At the Junior level there will be All Star teams at Junior and Intermediate,.
Rookie Summer Teams are coach pitch teams. They play two games per week and may involve some travel to neighbouring Little Leagues. Games usually start at 6:00 pm. The teams can also participate in weekend tournaments. . If there are sufficient numbers, we may offer a tiered rookie program which will allow for all our players to continue developing their skills.
Every year Kanata will host one of the age level District tournaments, and the parents involved with the team participating will be expected to run the tournament. Kanata hosts the Junior Districts and Senior Canadians in 2016. .
Also, Kanata summer teams Rookie through Junior will participate in the Kanata hosted “Scott Tokessey Memorial Tournament” on the 2nd weekend of August, and all team parents will be expected to volunteer time at this Charity tournament.
