Rally Cap Program

Updated Friday January 12, 2018 by Kanata Baseball Association.

Kanata Baseball Association's Rally Cap Program is our initiation program for players born between 2014 and 2009. Rally Cap is Baseball Canada's initiative to enhance players' and coaches' first experience with the game. The program helps to teach players the five FUNdamentals of baseball in an exciting, supportive, and safe environment. Players have the opportunity to develop skills and earn coloured Baseball Canada “Rally Caps” corresponding to various levels of achievement.

The 2018 Rally Cap season will build on the successes of 2017 with some exciting changes to address our rapidly growing membership.

New for 2018, the Rookie Program is based on the Baseball Ontario Rookie Ball program and is offered for players, born 2010 to 2009, who have graduated from the Rally Cap Program by earning their Red Caps.  Teams will play in a KBA organized, machine-pitch interlock league comprising of 4 KBA teams and participating Ottawa-area associations.  Rookie teams will also play in 2 local tournaments with additional playing opportunities including exhibition games and select tournaments.  Rookie teams should expect to average 3 field times per week.  Rookie roster spots are limited and players will be selected based on demonstrated skills during spring evaluations; players not selected for Rookie teams will be transferred to the Spring Rally Cap Program.

The Spring Rally Cap Program is a 2 month development program, running May to June, following the guidelines outlined by Baseball Canada open to players born 2014 to 2009.  Based on evaluations held in early April, players are sorted into “Tiers” based on age and skill level.  Spring Rally Cap teams meet 2 times per week, with the option to play either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday.  The practice and game formats defined for Rally Cap Tiers are designed to maximize player development by increasing speed of play and fielding opportunities.

The Summer House League is a 2 month fun league, running July to August, reinforcing the FUNdamentals of baseball introduced in the Spring Rally Cap Program.  In this coach-pitch league, players are sorted into balanced teams and play a 12 game season followed by championship playdowns.  This program emphasizes fun and sportsmanship in a casual environment.  Teams will play twice a week, Monday to Thursday, with occasional additional practices.

The Summer Rally Cap Program is a 2 month continuation of the Rally Cap program for our youngest players born 2014 to 2013, running July to August.  The approach to practice and play in Summer is more casual than that of Spring, with the number and duration of activities based on the desires of the program participants.

What to Expect

  • Registration for the Rookie and Spring Rally Cap Programs opens in mid-January and closes in late March; however, our space is limited and most programs fill well before the scheduled close.

  • Evaluations for all programs are held in early April; players born 2012 to 2009 must attend at least one evaluation session. Evaluation weekend is tentatively scheduled for April 13-14.

  • Players are sorted and assigned to teams in late April, team meetings are held, uniforms are distributed, and teams begin spring play as soon as the city opens fields, usually, the first week of May.

  • Rookie teams begin practicing in late April, with a regular season running May to July and playoffs finishing mid-August.  Rookie teams are expected to participate in the KBA Rookie Tournament (June 16-17) and the Scott Tokessey Memorial Tournament (August 4-5).

  • Spring Rally Cap teams begin play the first week of May and continue to the last week of June. The Spring Rally Cap FUNday is tentatively scheduled for June 23.

  • Registration for all Summer Programs opens in late May and closes mid-June.

  • Summer House League teams are formed based on spring evaluations and coach feedback, with teams beginning play the second week of July. League play finishes mid-August with the championship playdowns wrapping up in late August.

All players are expected to bring a baseball glove and batting helmet, and should wear a jock/jill and appropriate footwear.  Baseball pants are highly recommended.

KBA will supply all teams with all practice and game equipment. Players do not need to bring their own bats, but if they choose to do so, they must comply with the applicable regulations.

Rally Cap players will be provided with a Baseball Canada T-shirt and Rally Cap.  All players will be given the opportunity to earn additional Rally Caps. Rookie players will be provided a Kanata Cubs baseball cap and loaner Kanata jerseys.
